Planning Ahead for your College Career

Wednesday, October 04 2017
6:00 PM

Location: Anthology Event Center, 706 Williams Blvd

A college degree can transform your life and lifestyle.  Individuals with a college degree generally enjoy greater wealth and security, better health, a closer family, and a stronger community.  However, a successful college experience requires planning – planning that begins in high school.  In this seminar, Dr. Rich Quadrel will describe how to build a semester-by-semester plan for high school students and families to maximize their opportunities to successfully enroll in the college of their choice.

A good college plan has five elements:  planning your academic curriculum, selecting extracurricular activities, finding the right college, assembling a successful college application, and paying for college.  In this first seminar, Dr. Quadrel will provide an overview of the plan and then focus on the first two elements (the other three elements will be covered in future seminars).  He will discuss how to choose an appropriate curriculum track, the importance of maintaining a good GPA, and a comparison of advance credit options such as Advanced Placement (AP) classes and Running Start.  For extracurricular activities, Dr. Quadrel will emphasize “quality” over “quantity” and how to focus your activities to demonstrate initiative, commitment, progress, and leadership.

To register call 509-378-3100 x3220 or go online to https://www.gesa.com/learn/seminars

Scroll down to the Seminar Schedule and click on “Sage College Prep Series.”

Finding Your Perfect College

Thursday, October 12 2017
6:00 PM

Location: Anthology Event Center, 706 Williams Blvd

There are over 4,700 degree-granting institutions in the United States, including both 4-year and 2-year colleges.  How do you find the one that’s best for you?  In this seminar, Dr. Rich Quadrel will recommend key criteria for narrowing down your search, including fields of study, tuition and fees, location and setting, size, housing, campus life, and community.  He will also demonstrate some free online tools to help find and compare different schools.

Once a working list of candidates is developed, families should try to visit schools of interest.  There’s really no substitute for walking through campus and interacting directly with students, faculty and administrators.  This can be a time-consuming process, so Dr. Quadrel will offer ideas of how to plan your visit for maximum value and efficiency.

To register, call 509-378-3100 x3220 or go online to https://www.gesa.com/learn/seminars.

Scroll down to the Seminar Schedule and click on “Sage College Prep Series.”

The seminars will be held at the Anthology Event Center, 706 Williams Blvd., Richland.

This free seminar is sponsored by Gesa Credit Union.

The sticker price for many colleges can be a real shock - the cost of tuition, fees, room, board, and travel often adds up to tens of thousands of dollars per year.  The good news is that most students don't pay the full sticker price.  The bad news is that navigating through financial aid, scholarships, grants, and loans can be a real headache.  In this presentation, Dr. Quadrel will describe what drives college costs and what families typically pay.  He will also discuss available financial aid options to help cover college costs.  Whether it's an academic or sports scholarship, a federal loan, or educational grant, each option has its own set of requirments and timeline.
